Navigating the Hype of Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In

May 23, 2013

For years, I have been hearing women of all ages say they wonder what has become of feminism. Women who were part of the Feminist Movement back in the day are often disappointed that younger women take for granted the rights and opportunities they have and shy away from identifying as feminists. I have heard a lot of college women all over the country say they have felt scolded by older women for being passive, ungrateful and out of touch with what needs to happen to reach equality between the sexes. Furthermore, young people express discomfort with the word “feminist” because it connotes the angry man-hating philosophy they have heard so much about. Most college students agree that men and women deserve equal political, economic and social opportunities (definition of feminism), but a good number of these men and women balk at identifying as feminists.

Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In is a compelling book that seems to be the first book in a long time to start a conversation about reclaiming feminism. People are responding. There is plenty of criticism, but even Sandberg says she doesn’t have the answers. However, she is one of the few who was bold enough to ask us all to Lean In and reconsider feminism. I admire her and appreciate her message that two efforts need to work together to make change. Society needs to progress (external obstacles) and women need to examine and break down what has held them back (internal obstacles). The following articles hit on many of the issues she addresses in the book.
